Getting to Los Angeles and Pasadena

The main airports that serve the Los Angeles area are Los Angeles International (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank (BUR) airports. These are 28 and 16 miles from Pasadena, respectively. Flights are also possible to Ontario International Airport (ONT), which is farther away (37 miles).

Rental cars, taxis, and ride-share services (Uber, Lyft) are available at these airports upon arrival. A taxi from LAX to Pasadena is estimated to cost about $85-$130; typical cost ranges for Uber/Lyft are $75-$90. The travel time is between 40 and 60 minutes.

There is also an option to use public transportation to reach Pasadena from LAX (not recommended due to substantially increased travel times). At LAX, the FlyAway bus takes passengers to Union Station (make sure to take the one to Union Station, not Van Nuys), and at Union Station there is the Metro A line to Pasadena. Pasadena Transit has several bus routes that can take travelers close to their hotel.

Getting to the Caltech Campus

If you are driving to the Caltech campus, details regarding visitor parking can be found here. If you are driving an EV or hybrid vehicle, there are charging stations in both the North Wilson and California Structures. However, to use these, you will need a mobile app for OPF Energy Mobile, which can be downloaded from the Apple and Android app stores (see details here).

If you would like to take a bus to get from your lodging to campus, you can check the schedules and maps of Pasadena Transit. The Route 10 and 20 buses stop on Del Mar Blvd on the north side of campus and on Lake Ave a couple of blocks to the west, respectively. The Metro 267 bus also connects Colorado Blvd and Del Mar Blvd. There is also Metro Micro, an on-demand rideshare service.
