Many participants are likely already familiar with Pasadena and the Caltech campus. For those of you new to visiting Southern California, and Pasadena specifically, the main airports at which to arrive are Los Angeles International (LAX) and the Hollywood Burbank (BUR) Airports. These are 28 and 16 miles from Pasadena, respectively. Flights are also possible to Ontario International Airport (ONT), however, that is farther away (37 miles). Rental cars, taxis, shared-ride vans, and ride-share services (Uber, Lyft) are available at these airports upon arrival. A taxi from LAX to Pasadena is estimated to cost about $80-$100; typical cost ranges for Uber are $55-$70.
Important note about LAX: if you have never been to LAX, or it has been awhile since your last trip to it, all of the ride shares and taxis have to pick up at a part of the airport called LAXit (pay no attention to mention of a People Mover ready by 2023 on that website; that was pure fantasy). There is a free shuttle that will pick you up outside the Arrivals at the terminal in which you arrive. (Many international flights arrive at the Tom Bradley terminal, in the middle of the horseshoe that is LAX.) The shuttle will take you to LAXit. If you are arriving at either Terminal 1 (Southwest) or Terminal 7 (and 8; United), you are at the ends of the horseshoe and can fairly easily walk to LAXit (especially from Terminal 1), rather than take the shuttle, which can be a real timesaver (there are signs that lead the way; these arrivals are typically domestic).
If you are driving to the Caltech campus, details regarding visitor parking can be found here. Electric and hybrid vehicles can take advantage of charging stations located in the North Wilson and California parking structures. To use these, you will need a mobile app for OPF Energy Mobile, which can be downloaded from the Apple and Android app stores. See details here.
Here are two maps of the Caltech Campus to help orient you during your visit. The second map is annotated, showing the location of the Cahill Center (site of the conference), along with some local spots for lunch or coffee. All are within easy walking distance of the conference venue.
