April 11, 2017 - April 13, 2017

Program

Note: The agenda will be a mix of invited presentations, pop-up & impromptu presentations/sharing sessions, informal discussion, facilitated dialogue, and writing sessions.

Day 1: April 11, 2017

8:15 a.m.         Coffee & light breakfast available in the meeting room

8:30 a.m.         Welcome & Introductions (Co-Chairs:  Gordon K. Squires & Saeko Okada)

8:45 a.m.         Review:  Workshop objectives & proposed outcomes

9:05 a.m.         Discussion: Working assumptions & proposed diagnostic questions

Objective:  This session is designed to share a set of working assumptions about the problem(s) and challenge(s) & test whether they are universal among different international science projects.  There will be an opportunity for participants to share experiences that illustrate challenges and opportunities related to “making the case” for workforce, education, public outreach, and communication programs and approaches.

9:45 a.m.         Break

10:00 a.m.       Discussion: Making the Case for Workforce, Education, Public Outreach, and Communications (WEPOC)

Objective:  This session is designed to get at the heart of the workshop which seeks to distill how to “make the case” for WEPOC.  To stimulate discussion, organizers will propose a number of rationales they have used to articulate the case for WEPOC programs. Workshop participants are invited to build off of, refine, and suggest the elimination of proposed rationales.  Special attention will be on the following questions:  are there compelling rationales that are missing? Are any of the rationales universal to all international science projects?

12:00 p.m.       Lunch

12:45 p.m.       Discussion (continued)

Objective:  This session will build on the morning’s dialogue and the wall posters.  Workshop participants will discuss if some of the rationales are more universally compelling/powerful/persuasive than others? If so, why?

1:45 p.m.         Break

2:00 p.m.         Vignettes: Participants are asked to share experiences relevant to the workshop’s goals.

Objective:  Participants are asked to share experiences relevant to workshop goals (e.g., challenges, lessons learned, and illustrative stories).  These sessions are designed to be open-ended and provide time and space for workshop participants to build off of experiences or emerging ideas.

4:00 p.m.         Reflections by workshop participants & identification of next steps

4:30 p.m.         Adjourn

5:15 p.m.         [Optional] Walking tour of downtown

Objective:  Enjoy fresh air and a walking tour of downtown Pasadena with Gordon Squires and Sandra Dawson.

9:00 a.m.         Steps:  Developing a WEPOC strategy for large, international, science projects

Objective:  In this session, we will presume WEPOC leadership has successfully made the case for a WEPOC program.  This session tackles what happens next.  Workshop participants will collectively develop a process guide.  We will seek to mirror a scientific or engineering approach, since those are universally understood and acceptable frameworks for large, international projects.
